Green ride

Everything started the moment I saw those beautiful candy-colored vintage bikes at one of the largest flea markets in Milan, 5 years ago. It was love at first sight. Being young and ignorant, the only models of bicycles that I knew existed were BMX, mountain and racing bikes, and none suited the girly girl in me.

To make matters worst, the biking culture was sadly, never a storm in my native hometown with automobiles always the priority for commuting.

Reasons to possess a bike of my own:

1. Ease of travel and increase in photo snapping opportunities

I love to travel (even just to the nearby beach or park) to take photos. I’m always surprised to be able to observe new people and happenings even at venues that I often frequent (which equals to more photo opportunities). And with biking, I waste no time waiting for public transport and it brings out the adventurous side of me.

After making numerous biking (rented bikes) trips to Pulau Ubin, I found that it is easier to find pretty areas to photograph or rest and most importantly the bicycle gives me access to “secret addresses/locations” quicker or could have missed if I travelled on foot. If I own a bicycle in Singapore, it would be faster and easier (and more fun too) to hunt for “hidden treasures” to share with you ☺

Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride.
~ John F. Kennedy

2. A couch potato no more

I stay home most of the time, except when I need to do some grocery shopping or chilling out with friends and family. I admit that I am not disciplined in making myself work at home from 9-5. My greatest distraction is TV, which kind of became my best “friend” at home and I always strive to stay loyal to it (I hate my myself :-/). The outcome? I became addicted to TV programmes and gained much weight!

I’m hoping a new bicycle (with regular riding of course!) will keep my weight and health in check and keep me exercising frequently without the boredom of a mundane jog.

For instance, the bicycle is the most efficient machine ever created: Converting calories into gas, a bicycle gets the equivalent of three thousand miles per gallon.
~ Bill Strickland, The Quotable Cyclist

3. Green, green, green

We can’t feel the pain of Mother Earth as global warming worsens day after day. Walking and cycling (the human engine!) are the greenest way to travel without harming the environment.

The bicycle is a curious vehicle. Its passenger is its engine.
~ John Howard

4. Cycling not racing

When I first arrived in Singapore, I struggled to catch up with the “speed” of this city. Escalators zooming like a mass production factory’s conveyer belt, pedestrians walking at jogging speeds and people talking like chasing a bullet train. A hectic lifestyle exhausts the mind.

Cycling is a great way to relax, have a breather and take in the beautiful sights and sounds of your surroundings. The slower pace of leisure biking balances the every day stresses, preparing you for your longer journey ahead in life.

Life is like riding a bicycle - in order to keep your balance, you must keep moving.
~ Albert Einstein

5. New friends, new explorations

Nothing beats to have friends always by your side. Ever thought of having a bicycle picnic tour with like-minded friends? I have! We could all decorate our bikes in a single theme (maybe a Liberty Prints theme!) with matching picnic outfits and setup.

Together we can spend a day cycling, taking photos, crafting and picnic-ing, wouldn’t that be so fun? ☺

    1. So sweet of you and finally I have someone agreeing with what I said. Since you just bought a new bicycle, I propose you invite some of your friends (who own bicycles too) to go treasure hunting for some DIY materials to personalize your bicycles (who knows? you and you friends might end up becoming “girly bikes DIY experts”).
